We all know that the Postmodern Art world can be incredibly confusing, so here are some books, web-sites, and films to look at!
Average Books:
Aronson, Marc. Art Attack: A Short Cultural History of the Avant-Garde. 1998. NY, Clarion Books.
A good book with a decent amount of pictures, this book gives a run down of the Advant-Garde movement which is key in the lead in to Postmodern.
Easier Books:
Castellucci, Cecil and Jim Rugg. The Plain Janes. 2007. NY, DC Comics
This is a graphic novel about a group of girls who take public art into their own hands in their community.
Barry, Lynda. What It Is. 2008. NY, Farrar, Straus, and Giroux.
Although this is a pretty easy read, this book is a great illustration of how postmodern art does not have to be restricted to just painting, drawing or printing. It can include text and also it does not depend on technical training.
Films:
Art:21-Art in the Twenty First Century, Season Four. 2007
This is an EXCELLENT series from PBS that discusses themes within the art world today. An art world that is becoming more and more postmodern.
Art City: Making it in Manhattan 2002
This is a bit dated now, but still raises some very good points about the trends that are in wide use now.
Both of these films are made with an adult audience in mind, but they are approachable at any level if you have the patience to wait for the artwork and artist interviews through the techno-jargon.
